Prof. Donatini graduated from Pisa University, Italy with a MD in minimally invasive thyroid surgery and completed the residency program in General Surgery in the Department of General and Endocrine Surgery of Prof Paolo Miccoli in Pisa, Italy.During his residency spent an internship period at Brown University, RI, USA in endocrine surgery with Prof JM Monchik and obtained the ECFMG Certificate.
Prof. Donatini has a postgraduate fellowship in endocrine surgery at CHU Lille (Prof F Pattou abd Prof B Carnaille) and in minimally invasive adrenal surgery at Essen Clinic University, Germany with Prof M Walz.
Prof Donatini obtained his PhD degree at the University of Pisa in 2012, in Proteomics analysis of biomarkers of thyroid cancer and lately (2017) the HDR at University of Poitiers, France.
He is board certified in Endocrine Surgery - DES Diplome (2012).
Current surgical activities of Prof. Donatini comprehend Adrenal, Thyroid, Parathyroid and Neuro-Endocrine Tumors. He is expert in minimally invasive procedures including laparoscopic adrenalectomy, thyroidectomy and parathyroidectomy.
Research Overview
Prof. Donatini’s research involves adrenal disease (particularly adrenal cancer and pheochromocytoma), neuromonitored thyroid surgery, thyroid oncology and parathyroid diseases, near-infrared stimulation of parathyroid glands (NIRAF).
He is involved in basic research on cellular transplantation at the INSERM Unit 1312 IRMETIST of University of Poitiers.
He also developed a teaching model in endocrine surgery at the Anatomy and Biomechanic Simulation Laboratory at the University of Poitiers - The SIMLIFE for Endocrine Surgery. This unique model used a reperfused reventilated human cadaver which allows simulation of living human being during surgery helping junior surgeons to learn and master difficult endocrine surgery procedures such as laparoscopic adrenalectomy or lateral neck dissection for thyroid cancer. He has authored or co-authored 74 articles and 13 textbook chapters on topics of endocrine or endocrine related surgery and participate in multicenter national and international studies.
